Ultraviolet light therapy or ultraviolet phototherapy is a form of medical treatment for certain photo-responsive skin disorders such as vitiligo, psoriasis, eczema, atopic dermatitis, mycosis fungoides, pityriasis rosea, scleroderma. It consists of irradiation of the patient with the specific UV spectrum including narrowband UVB and UVA, usually delivered from a UVB Phototherapy Device specially designed to output this frequency of ultraviolet.

Vitiligo is a pigmentary disorder resulting in typically asymptomatic white macules that can appear at any time during human life and can be psychologically devastating. It occurs in all skin types and at all ages, with equal frequencies between men and women. The patches of skin affected become white and usually have sharp margins. The hair from the skin may also become white.

311nm narrowband UVB spectrum can increase the number of melanocytes in areas of skin affected by vitiligo and prevent new white patches from forming. Gradually the melanocytes re-produces the melanin to get re-pigmentation.

1)Plug in and press the green power switch. Please notice that the power supply is AC230V/50Hz.

2)Wear UV goggles! The users must wear UV goggles to protect eyes from UV hazard!

3)Set the irradiation time on the controller. The initial irradiation time is 30 seconds.

4)Press Start/Pause key. Place the irradiator gently against skin. The lamp lightens and treatment starts.

5)When the number turns zero, the buzzer sounds. Irradiation finishes.

According to clinical research, vitiligo, psoriasis patients’ first irradiation time is 30 seconds. The progressive time depends on the last therapeutic reaction.

1)If no side effect, plus 20% based on the last irradiation time.

2)If turn light erythema, but disappear before the next treatment, plus 10% based on the last irradiation time.

3)If turn conspicuous erythema, but still not dissappear before the next treatment, maintain the last irradiation time.

4)If the erythema situation still very serious with pain and blister, stop irradiation and consult your doctor. After the erythema and blister disappear, reduce time to 50% of the last irradiation.

The patient should receive phototherapy every other/second day.

For the vitiligo or psoriasis on the scalp, ultraviolet light is hardly to reach the skin and irradiate the lesions due to the covering of hair. SIGMA hand-held UVB Phototherapy Device SH1 can be equipped with the comb for users to treat vitiligo and psoriasis. The comb is optional part for purchase.

For scalp treatment, SIGMA provides 2 radiation method. One is that users should cut short their hair to 1-2cm. In this case, the irradiator can be directly placed on the scalp to irradiate the skin lesion, no need the comb. The other is that users combine the irradiator with the comb to treat the scalp. Phototherapy comb with good light transmission can easily part the hair for better UV light absorption.
